Integration
What makes our classroom unique?
In all the classrooms at Westgate, there are students with a variety of learning styles and abilities. Some students receive services through literacy, resource, speech and language, social work, English language learning, and various other services that help our students have a successful educational experience.
In this classroom, a small number of students may require a greater amount or intensity of services. Based on student needs, these children may need individual or small group instruction outside the combined classroom. To accommodate this need, it is ideal to have an additional classroom, teaching assistants, and certified special education teacher readily available. A certified special education teacher (Ms. Redmon), along teaching assistants, work both in and out of the large group setting to accommodate the various needs of our class.
The class is combined in its entirety during science and social studies instruction, as well as for specials, lunch, and recess. Early in the year, we discuss how everyone is unique and has different strengths. At this time, we share examples anywhere from wearing glasses and struggling with a sport, to challenges many face trying to learn new things. Classes are very receptive to this discussion, and it supports acceptance and understanding to follow for a lifetime.
We look forward to spending the year with your children and watching them grow individually and as a learning community.
